urban love

Still playing catch-up on the blog. I super love urban shoots and don’t get enough of them. Where I live they are harder to come by because so much of California is either done up in stucco or some shade of brown. Not very inspiring. These images are from a recent trip to my hometown Pittsburgh.

And that green chair? Talk about an awesome find. I originally walked passed it in the antique store believing the price tag said “$450″ so I kept walking. {I suppose I’m used to “California prices”} But my sweet husband gave it another look only to discover it was only $45. Whaaah? Gets even better. We carried it to the register and the guy immediately said, “I’ll give that to you for $35!” Sold.

To those who are feeling a bit jealous of my chair let me tell you that thing was heavy! During this session I was sans Gary (my husband) who normally carries all my heavies without batting an eyelash. This time, however, I had to lug it around and boy oh boy, glad we found a great spot right near where we were parked. Thank you Pennsylvania for your cheap prop finds!

the balloons

Another one of my 100 degree sessions, but you’d never know it with this little one. Even with those long gorgeous locks, she was a trooper in the heat. Me, not so much (I must have downed three juice boxes). Before each session I look forward to getting to know the child I will be photographing — she was so friendly, inquisitive and loved to answer any question I dared ask (some kids sit and stare at me for a least a few questions … which I don’t blame them).

This first image cracks me up! About sums up how I feel about using balloons in sessions these days. I haven’t used them in quite awhile as they are forever in the wrong spot. In all honesty, I’m sure I’ll balloons a chance again soon enough. I find in working with kids, you have to be ready for anything!

Still playing catch up here … I’ll never forget this shoot as it was session number three in a row during our week of 100+ degree temps here in SoCal. This particular shoot was a brutal 103 at 5:30pm and I was without my usual assistant — set up and tear down was intense, to say the least. But, as so many photographers can relate, it’s about the end results – I love the vintage look. Each piece has been bought and collected from various antique stores, yard sales, flea markets and so forth. One day soon I’ll post some shots of how all my chairs are stored (an attempt at organization).

And those of you who have been following my blog for awhile know how much I adore red-heads ….it almost feels like a crime to convert their beautiful hues into black and white format!

First, I must show off my new chair …. a good chair (at a good price) is hard to find in SoCal and I have been looking for well over a year for an upholstered chair to use in my shoots. Living back East I was spoiled by the selection of chairs at bargain prices.

on vacation

Wrapping up an extended, yet long over-due trip to my home state (well, technically I was born in raised in ne Ohio, but …) of Pennsylvania. Aside from being rained out halfway through a Steelers game (which was an interesting experience), the weather has been absolutely perfect. I know when I lived here I was constantly re-scheduling sessions due to rain! Glad to catch a break.

Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things back at home, but I will miss my wonderful family & friends here on the east coast. Not to mention, my clients as well!

I hope you enjoy what is left of summer. There still is time for a smore or two!

Springtime

I love spring! Living back east springtime was more evident given the stark contrast of weather temps, but even in California the dreary hillsides embrace the new season with lush greenery and bloom with an array of wildflowers (though as temporary as it may be). We are busy celebrating the Easter holiday with beloved family … and lots of moving boxes! Thank you to those who shared their delicious recipes with me – much appreciated as this is my first Easter as the official “hostess – cook”. Settled on ham with sweet potatoes in the roaster, baked acorn squash, rolls, and the like … oh yeah, forget the carrot cake, I’m making red velvet cupcakes for dessert!

Images below shot with D700 & 50mm 1.4 lens. Subject is with Ford models and has appeared in ads for H&M, Pottery Barn Kids and Target. You’d think photographing a pro model would be easier, and not that it is difficult per say (especially this sweetie who was a doll), however I find model kids more so do poses/expressions that they’ve been asked to do in the past, rather than me as the photographer being able to “draw out” their personalities, emotions, etc. This is just something I’ve learned since moving to SoCal and photographing child models. Not complaining, of course. ;c)

the Hat

I know, I know, I’ve got to stop using “the hat” in my sessions. (There’s no really one “hat”, there are many hats, lol) But you know what, I love my hats and I plan on ridin’ this look out until I get tired of it, thank you very much. *Wink* I’m always on the hunt for a new inspiration, a new look … as a someone in the creative field you have to be, but for now, I’m cozying up right here for this look.

Remember Her?

Her parents first brought her to me when she was three years old; she was all eyes and had curly curly hair. View her old photo here. No more curls, but as beautiful as ever. And sweet too. When I arrived at our session she gave me a sparkly paper lollipop she made at school just for me. *Smile*

Also, this is my first series of images from our fall trip back to Pennsylvania. Beautiful as ever! Gary, my son and I had an amazing trip visiting friends and family as well as photographing old (and some new) PA clients. Not to mention hitting some old fave antique shops (like my $15 blue chair?). I miss back east, but to tell you the truth, this time of year I love living in California (it was 74 degrees and sunny today!).

Lastly, I will be in the Pittsburgh area more in 2010 and accepting new clients — if you are interested in a session (children only) in late July or October please contact me. Otherwise, further information on PA sessions will be posted on the blog in the next month or two.
